Derek received a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Mathematics from Saint Mary's University in Halifax in 1989. After graduation he studied seven years to become an actuary where he learned to use mathematics and statistics to assess and manage investment risks. He has 16 years experience working as an actuary and member of the executive management team at a large Halifax-based life insurance company.
Derek's work experience includes many years designing and pricing insurance and investment products that addressed the financial security needs of customers. This experience when coupled with his formal technical education provides the necessary tools to assess and manage investment portfolios that are tailored to the customers needs.
Derek joined Beacon Securities as an independent agent in 2006.
